Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Cask 42*** 37.5cl
Learn More About This Wine
The “Wehlener Sonnenuhr” (“Sun dial”) vineyard produces very elegant, mineral, and refined wines. The steep, stony, dark grey slate vineyard is situated on the right-hand river, and faces south-southwest. The sunshine naturally heats up the terroir extremely well and keeps the temperature ideal during the night. Rieslings from this vineyard are worldwide known for their longevity and ageing potential. Vines are extremely old (up to 130 years) and ungrafted.
Grapes at perfect physiological ripeness, partially botrytized, had been handpicked and selected mid October 2023 at 121° Oechsle level. Fermentation was done temperature controlled in traditional old oak barrels (Fuder) with indigenous yeast. Bottling was effected 26th March 2024.
“This Auslese was made from 40 ‘% botrytized grapes harvested on 100-120-year old un-grafted vines and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. This superb Auslese offers a stunning and incredibly fresh nose made of rhubarb, pineapple, vineyard peach, whipped cream, almond cream, mint, white fruit and smoke. The wine proves superbly creamy, bright and precise on the palate. The wine is incredibly long and hugely vibrating in the finish yet then reveals the more classic elements of a BA with dried fruits, honey and marzipan. What an incredibly success!” – Jean Fisch and David Rayer, Mosel Fine Wines, September 2024
