JJ Prum
Joh. Jos Prum is located in the middle of the Mosel Valley, around the 50th latitude in one of the more northern wine-growing regions of the world. The consequence of this is a longer vegetation period until November, sometimes even December. This relatively cool climate gives the Riesling grape enough time to develop intense fruit, floral and herbal notes, while maintaining high acidity and absorbing the fine minerals from the slate soils.
The estate today encompasses 55 acres and their vineyards are planted with 100 % Riesling – mostly ungrafted, old vines. Holdings are in the best parts of the top Middle-Mosel sites: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Bernkasteler Badstube.
The aim of the estate is to express the soil and climate conditions as authentic as possible for each vintage. Deciding on the ideal harvest time, the little as needed treatment in the cellar, the use of wild yeast, and the rather late bottling characterise JJ Prum’s wines. The wines show a unique interplay between fruitiness, minerality and acidity. They are famous for their ageability, long lasting youth and freshness in their expressive, complex character and clarity.
From Stephen Brook’s ‘Wines of Germany’:
“The wines whether a modest Kabinett or an opulent Beerenauslese, are the epitome of filigree elegance: light in body but intense in flavour, exquisitely balanced and precisely tuned, and capable of the most extraordinary longevity. With the rise of so many excellent wine makers in the region, one might have supposed that J.J Prum, with its profound conservatism, might have been overtaken and left behind. Not a bit of it. The estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit.”
