Learn More About This Wine

Bioma Tinto is an organically produced, SATIVA-certified wine created exclusively from the Quinta de Napoles vineyards, whose vines are quite young, with an average age of approximately 25 years. In producing this wine, Niepoort opted for minimal intervention and a maturation period in an old wooden wine vat which had previously been used for Port. The aim was to obtain a pure wine without too much influence from the oak, but with firm and elegant tannins.

The 2019 viticultural year was marked by dry weather. Spring began with high temperatures, which subsequently dropped and remained low during the entire summer. Some rainfall occurred at the right point of the vines’ growth phase, and flowering took place in excellent weather conditions, leading to medium to high yields with healthy berries. The mild days and cool nights of the month of August allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and harmoniously. Harvesting began op 8 August. The peak harvesting period took place during the week of 8 – 15 September, with the harvest ending on 1 October. After meticulous sorting, the grapes and 50% of the stems were transferred to conical stainless steel tanks where spontaneous fermentation took place at low temperatures for about one month. Once the wine completed alcoholic fermentation, it was pressed into stainless steel tanks where it went through malolactic fermentation and matured for 4 months. After the winter, the wine was transferred into a 5000L barrel for a further 12-month maturation period. As the Bioma 2019 is an organic wine, it was bottled completely unfiltered and unfined.

A restrained and quietly expressive Douro red, opening with lifted aromatics of wild strawberry, dried herbs and a distinct floral note of violet. Subtle graphite and a hint of tobacco add complexity, suggesting both place and evolution. The palate is dry and finely structured, with a firm backbone of tannins framing the fruit. Red berry notes persist, interwoven with herbal nuances and a gentle earthly depth. There is a sense of precision thoughout, favouring tension and linearity over weight. Long, composed finish, with lingering tobacco notes, reinforcing its understated, terroir-driven character.
