Learn More About This Wine

Schloss Gobelsburg is one of the oldest wineries of Austria with a documented history back to 1171. Cistercian monks, who were spreading at that time from Burgundy all over Europe, were donated their first vineyards in the Danube area, close to the village of Langenlois. The monks of the monastery have been working and looking after the vineyards until 1995. Since then Eva and Michael Moonsbrugger took over the responsibility for the heritage. “The primary goal is to preserve, to develop and to take the custodian and culture of winemaking of Schloss Gobelsburg into a new generation”.

The estate is located in the Danube area – 45 min west of Vienna – and is mainly producing wines which are related to the rich history of the estate. The winery’s main focus lies on the typical wines from the Danube appellations.

As a speciality, Michael is taking care of winemaking philosophies based on the rich history of the estate. This is the fundament of the Tradition wines, which pay homage to the winemaking philosophy of the early 19th century. Every year, editions of 3 wines with different maturity levels are released.

Looking at inventories of the monastic estate from the past centuries, the monks always had special wines that matured longer than the normal wines. The 10 year Tradition Heritage is an homage to this stylistical expression of the great Danube wines.

The vinification is typical for the elaboration of the early 19th century. After the harvest grapes are crushed, macerated for 10-18 hours, pressed with a basket press and fermented in wooden cakes without sedimentation. Wines were racked from cask to cask after fermentation and separated from the lees so that the wines get clearer and clearer even without filtration.

The wine contains 85% vintage 2010, 10% vintage 2009, and 5% of vintages 1996 to 2008. A blend of Gruner Veltliner 80% and 20% Riesling. A total of 3410 bottles and 240 magnums were produced.
