Learn More About This Wine

The crushed gravelly soils south of Gobelsburg in Ried (single vineyard, cru) Sachsenberg and Haid are ideal for the variety because the calcareous content allows for good drainage. Maturation of the wine lasts for 18 months in Austrian oak barrels and then for another 6 months in bottles.

It opens with a dark toast and a beautifully spiced bouquet with citrus fruit and herbal notes, while it displays beautiful red and dark berry and venison aromas that intermingle with juniper and clove nuances on the palate. Showing fine tannins, this is an elegant, silky textured and perfectly balanced Pinot with fine yet firm tannins and a good, tight structure that lets enough juice run through to make up for a stimulating, digestible and food-friendly finish. This should be great with venison. Being unfiltered the wine can show sediments. Great ageing potential.

The variety holds a strong symbolic meaning for the CIstercians. You could easily mistake this for a Village wine from Burgundy, thanks to the fruity, earthy and meaty notes and the balance of finely knit tannins and bright acidity and its long, dry and mineral finish.
