With the Conciso Branco, Niepoort has once again tried to create a fresh and elegant white wine from the Dao region, which shows off the potential of its old vines and granite terroir. The grapes come from the Quinta da Lomba, which has exceptionally old vineyards, with some vines being almost a century old. These sites are planted predominantly with Bical, Ecruzado and Malvasia, among other indigenous grape varieties of the region. 

The 2023 wine-growing year proved to be particularly challenging and strategically demanding. The winter was mild, followed by a warm spring marked by several very cold nights and occasional frost episodes. Summer was characterized by extremely dry conditions and intense heat, accelerating grape ripening and leading to an early harvest. The white grape harvest began on August 28 and concluded with red varieties on September 15. During harvest, two periods of heavy rainfall occurred, requiring continuous adjustments to the winery’s working strategy. It was a year that demanded rigorous grape selection due to the coexistence of overripe and underripe fruit, requiring increased precision to ensure the final quality of the wine. Produced at Quinta da Lomba, Conciso Branco fermented in granite vats and aged for 24 months in used 228L barrels, without batonnage, where it underwent malolactic fermentation, preserving the wine’s purity, texture, and expression. 

The 2023 vintage reveals itself with the elegance of a wine that has no need to announce its presence. Stone fruit, lime zest and discreet oak come together effortlessly – the kind of oak that accompanies the conversation rather than trying to dominate it. Vanilla appears with restraint, free from excess or ostentation. On the palate, the wine is serious without being solemn. It offers structure, freshness and vibrant acidity, giving it poise and definition. Hazelnut and tobacco notes emerge gradually, adding depth without disturbing the overall balance. The finish is long, delicately spiced, and leaves the impression of a wine that knows exactly what it is meant to be. Even so, there is no reason to rush: some white wines reward patience, and this one seems to know that secret well.
