Niepoort Poerinho
Learn More About This Wine
Poeirinho is produced exclusively from grapes grown in the organically certified vineyards of Quinta de Baixo. Its name revives the former designation of the Baga grape variety, paying tribute to the great classic wines of Bairrada, renowned for their elegance, delicate colour, moderate alcohol levels, and remarkable ageing potential. Inspired by Dirk Niepoort’s passion for the Baga variety and the exceptional terroir of Bairrada, this wine reflects an ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing old vineyards, mainly located around Cantanhede, while remaining the authenticity and character of one of Portugal’s most emblematic wine-growing regions.
The 2023 wine-growing year was marked by irregular climatic conditions, with a very dry winter and summer and some rainfall during spring. Harvest took place between 11 august and 21 September. The rainfall in September required an adjustment to the harvesting strategy in order to preserve the quality and sanitary condition of the grapes. Poeirinho 2023 results from the selection of several parcels of old and century-old vineyards. Fermentation took place spontaneously in closed stainless-steel tanks, with an extended maceration period of four to five weeks. Followed malolactic fermentation, the wine aged for 24 months in used oak casks with a capacity of 2500 litres. This allowed for a slow and balanced evolution while preserving the identity of the grape variety and the expression of the terroir.
This wine shows a beautiful pale purple hue. Its aromas are linear, very delicate, and complex. Initially, floral notes and drier nuances such as tobacco appear, on a foundation of rhubarb, cherries and red berries, completed by hints of spice and mint. The palate offers a delicate structure; elegant but with tension and acidity that lend the wine longevity. A long, expressive, and spicy finish lingers in the mouth.
Pair with roasted meats, specifically goat, oven-baked cod or vegetarian dishes based on legumes.
