Learn More About This Wine

100% Sangiovese from 25/35 year old vines, grown on Galestro (clay schist), prevalently clayey with marine deposits. Alcoholic fermentation with maceration on the skins (25-30 days) at a controlled temperature and spontaneous malolactic fermentation, both occurring in Slavonian oak vats (where it stays for 6-8 months). Aged for 30-36 months in Slavonian Oak Barrels and for at least six months in bottle.

Winter was characterized by abundant rainfall and prolonged periods below zero. Rainfall amounted to 45mm, concentrated in the central part of the month; the average minimum temperature was 3.4 degrees Celcius, while the average maximum was 8.3 degrees Celcius. These first two months of 2021 can be considered cold. There was a sharp rise in maximum temperatures during the last week of March, reaching up to 26 degrees Celsius and causing the vines to begin budding. In April, the vines were exposed to sub-zero temperatures on the 7th, which lasted about 18 hours. In May, average temperatures rose again, with peaks of 27 degrees Celcius. This helped the vineyards produce new buds after the cold spell in April. Flowering took place between the end of the month and the first week of June. Fruit set progressed smoothly through the summer. Day-time and night-time temperatures fluctuated considerably, ensuring the canopy remained green despite the heat, with no signs of stress. September saw the lowest rainfall of the year at just 1.5 mm, with four days exceeding 30 degrees Celcius, but with significant day-night temperature variation. Despite the lack of rain, this allowed the leaves to maintain good colour and had a positive effect on the grapes and their aromatic development. October recorded total rainfall of 12.8mm, with minimum temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius between the 9th and 14th, which further improved grape ripening.

Aromas of ripe plums, blackberry, and cherry on the nose, accented by dry herbal notes reminiscent of tea leaves. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, yet guided by smooth, velvety tannins. A lively balance of acidity and structure makes the 2021 enjoyable now but suited to a few years of ageing. Mature red berries dominate the flavour profile, finishing with subtle earthy undertones. The 2021 is the vintage that is most prized in recent years and while it could be cellared further, we believe that it is a good moment to drink it.
