Niepoort Batuta
Learn More About This Wine
The grapes to produce Batuta come from Quinta do Carril, from a north-facing vineyard with more than 70 years, and also from old vineyards about 100 years old near Quinta de Napoles. Batuta is the result of a delicate vinification process, with long maceration but gentle extraction to obtain a complex, fine and elegant wine.Â
The 2020 growing year was very heterogeneous. A rainy winter was followed by a quite moderate spring, providing favourable conditions for the vines’ growth. On the other hand, the month of June was relatively cool and slowed down the growth cycle. July brought very high temperatures (the hottest since 1931), with three heat waves which reduced the yields somewhat. Harvesting began in the first weeks of August in the hottest areas and concluded in the higher-lying slopes at the end of September. After the fruit was meticulously sorted in the vineyard as well as in the cellar, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, with a skin contact period of approximately 80 days. Following this long maceration period, the wine matured for about 20 months in French barriques, with 50% new wood.Â
The Batuta is one of the most firmly structured of Niepoort wines, while it also upholds their signature qualities of subtlety, elegance, and freshness. Its deep colour reveals purple glints. The typical aroma of graphite harmonises with floral notes on a base of cassis, which mingle seamlessly with some hints of oak.Â
