Technically, the Cote Roannaise is part of the Central Loire Valley wine region. Yet it’s so far south geographically, it is much closer to Beaujolais. Like Beaujolais, the Côte Roannaise reds are made from Gamay, but it is a local variety called Gamay St. Romain. Domaine Sérol is one of the only estates in the region that focuses on premium quality wine. They are certified organic and in the process of converting to biodynamics. The Côte Roannaise is already a gastronomic mecca, with the famous restaurant Troisgros situated in Roanne, and interestingly, the Sérols work in partnership with Troisgros to make a special cuvée for them.
