Gramona

The Gramona Family, fifth and sixth generation of a winemaking family consider their experience, and the humility that comes with it, to be their greatest asset. They believe that,  in their area, on the land in the Anoia and Bittles river basins near Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, it is possible to produce sparkling wines, which are “up there” with the world’s greatest sparkling wines. To do this, they have formed an alliance with a unique grape variety: the Xarel-lo, the backbone of the sparklings. True to their beliefs in respecting the environment, they manage their vineyards according to organic and biodynamic principles.

Today the history of the wine is being told by the family’s fifth and sixth generations headed by Jaume, Roc and Leonard Gramona. Together they are working on a gradual and careful generational handover, as has always been the case at Gramona. 2021 marked the Gramona family’s first century as sparkling wine makers and its 140th anniversary as winegrowers.

Gramona is located in the Alt Penedes region, 30 kms south of Barcelona. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The vineyards are protected during the harsher winters by the majestic, rocky Montserrat mountain to the north. In general, the soils are clay, a calcareous-loam, with a few areas of alluvial soil found near the Anoia River and slate closer to Montserrat. These soils are also characterised by the presence of têtes de poupées, calcareous formations of bacterial origin, which mineralize, refresh and enrich the subsoil and therefore the vine.

Perhaps more famous for their sparkling wines, they also make still dry wines from the Penedes from indigenous varieties. The wines are distinctive and variety specific to showcase the uniqueness and power of varieties such as Xarel.lo (Font Jui), and Xarel.lo Vermell (Mart Rose).
