Prieler
The Prieler family has been rooted in Schützen since 1347. Through centuries of change, they stayed—and eventually turned to winemaking. Georg’s grandfather was the first to bottle wines, winning awards and delivering as far as Salzburg. His parents expanded the estate, acquiring exceptional vineyard sites and deepening the family’s focus on quality and regional identity. Their wines soon attracted international attention, with historic ratings from top critics.
Georg Prieler grew up in the vineyards and gained winemaking experience through internships abroad before returning home. Since 2004, he has gradually taken on more responsibility, and since 2012, he has led the estate with a clear vision: certified organic farming, minimal intervention, and a focus on expressing each vineyard’s unique character.
The estate’s vineyards cover a variety of expositions and soil types between Lake Neusiedl and the Leitha Mountains. This diversity is essential to the precision of the wines. Whites like Pinot Blanc thrive on fossil-bearing limestone, lending structure, minerality, and aging potential. The Johanneshöhe vineyard, planted with Blaufränkisch, sits on iron-rich brown loam, producing vibrant and spicy wines. Meanwhile, Goldberg, with its mica schist soils, yields powerful, finely structured Blaufränkisch.
The climate—where warm Pannonian air meets cooling breezes from the Leitha Mountains—creates ideal conditions for slow ripening and balance. This natural contrast, combined with diverse soils, results in wines with clarity, depth, and longevity.
Georg has one goal in mind: to press wines that tell of their origin and variety in a detailed, precise, balanced and light-hearted way.
