Kalkvogel Gruner Veltliner
Learn More About This Wine
The Kalkvogel bottling, literally “Limestone-Bird” comes from the Vogelsand, “Birdsong” vineyard in Ollersdorf. Carmen Zillinger says that they have searched out the part of the vineyard where the limestone peaks out of the loess to produce a wine that’s “delicate and elusive, smoky and silky”.
Vintage 2021 is characterised by a very well balanced climate which helped the vines to grow slowly and in good conditions. Good humidity, very cool nights and warm days during summer. The result is a wine with an elegant depth, concentration, beautiful acidity, very low pH values and a vibrant soul.
Pure sand-lime brick characterises this barren, south-facing soil in Ollersdorf. Year after year, the Veltliner from this parcel impresses with an enormously smoky mineral elegance, tight-knit, swift, firm and powerful on the palate. The most demanding and at the same time most exciting vineyard of Zillinger.
1400 bottles produced per year.
“Big and beefy nose, like an essence of Grüner Veltliner. Good, sleek texture and lots of freshness. Owes its vitality to the real kick of tingly acidity on the finish. Very long. Pretty smart!”
