Sitting at the top of the NZ’s South Island, Marlborough has a unique combination of geographical qualities that have enabled it to become New Zealand’s flagship wine region. Experiencing a true maritime climate, Marlborough is defined by mountains, braided rivers, deep gravel aquifers, and the ocean. These influences shape a unique climate, which provides a combination of high sunshine hours, moderate temperatures, cool nights, low rainfall and humidity, and a large variation of soil types. The region is divided into three distinct sub-regions being the Wairau Valley, the Southern Valleys, and the Awatere Valley.
Deep down comes from vineyards close to the southern edge of the Wairau Valley. The soils are silt over gravels, with minimal influence of clay or river stones and produce wines of great texture.
