Bideona
Bideona is located in Rioja Alavesa, the highest sub-region of Rioja. It is a joint venture between the Izagirre family and Península Viticultores, and is the result of more than a decade’s worth of experience. They are known for producing local and village wines from single plots that are spread over 300 parcels on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria mountain range, which offers protection from the wind, cold and rain from the north. These plots are primarily located in the villages of Villabuena de Alava, Leza, Samaniego, Laguardia, Navaridas, and Banos del Ebro and the average size of these plots is less than half a hectare each.
The soils in this region are more limestone than the rest of Rioja and the average age of the vines is about 50 years. They produce deep, precise wines capable of long ageing.
Bideona belong to a new wave of winemakers in Rioja that are classifying their wines by the quality and specific origins, rather than the traditional ageing demarcation of Rioja. In doing so they can showcase the individuality of the terroir and create wines that reflect a genuine sense of place, wines that serve as the benchmarks for the Rioja Alavesa terroir, positioning it as one of the great terroirs in the world.
