Pittnauer

Weingut Gerhard and Brigitte Pittnauer is located in Gols, a small town on Lake Neusiedl in the Burgenland region of Austria. Gerhard inherited the vineyard at age 18, over the last 40 years he has been developing a very individual style and taste. The couple sticks to their motto: “Let things grow naturally, not artificially.” Improvisation and the joy of spontaneity are more important than predictable perfection, which requires flexibility, an uncomplicated approach and living in the here and now.

In 2006 the Weingut adapted its approach to dynamic work and doing all vineyard work manually, moving more towards a minimalist approach where they let the grapes and winemaking take their time, resulting in what they call ‘living wine’. The Pittnauers are constantly working on expanding their skills with a lot of diligence and courage and constantly trying to increase the quality of their wines.

In 1998 the winery joined the Pannobile group, a well-known group of winegrowers in the Burgenland region, thanks to the family dynamic and lively exchange of opinions, it helped Pittnauer to grow and increase the complexity of their wines. The group also wants to focus on the regional grapes that express the unique terroir best, for example the very Austrian variety Saint Laurent. The Pittnauers also co-founded ‘Respect’ in 2007, an international group of leading biodynamic wineries.

In Gerhard Pittnauer’s own words:

“Being vintner and winemaker is not a cakewalk, most of the time. Considering this, I respect different attitudes and styles, even if I prefer wines, reduced to essential – in making and drinking.”
