Ziereisen
Ziereisen is a true family domain with Edeltraud and Hanspeter Ziereisen and their children Ida and Johann. They are located in Baden, the warmest part of Germany, which offers long hours of sunshine. The Baden region touches both the Swiss and French borders, and compared to other German Pinot Noirs it can be said to have the most Burgundian style. Next to that, the Mediterranean air blows into the Upper Rhine Valley and the precipitation levels are significantly lower than the rest of the Markgraeflerland.
Hanspeter founded the winery in 1991 and has led it with Edeltraud to its current size of 21 hectares. Time and craftsmanship are the two concepts that are most important to the quality of their wines. The focus lies on the vineyard; to create wines like Ziereisen most of the work is done in the vineyard. Most of the work is done by hand, even after the harvest. Hand selecting healthy and ripe berries causes the best spontaneous fermentations. The winemaking refrains from any technical cellar interventions, and the wines are given the maturation time (in handmade German casks) they need followed by unfiltered bottling for most wines.
Ziereisen decided to classify all of their wines as Landwein to give them the necessary scope to develop into independent wine personalities and not to be dictated by bureaucracy.
