Georg Breuer
The primary focus of the Georg Breuer estate are stylish and powerful dry wines.
The estate, founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. From the early 1980s Bernhard Breuer’s efforts gained an international reputation for the estate. Today it is managed by his daughter Theresa Breuer and production manager of many years, Hermann Schmoranz.
The estate cultivates 40 hectares of vineyards in Rheingau, in Rudesheim (25.5 ha), Rauenthal (6.5 ha), and Lorch (8 ha), 65% of which are on steep slopes. Grape varieties: 86% Riesling, 10% Pinot Noir, 3% Pinto Gris, 1 % Pinot Blanc, Orleans and Heunisch. The best vineyard sites are in Rudesheim: Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland and Berg Roseneck, in Rauenthal: Nonnenberg as well as in Lorch: Pfaffenwies.
Berg Roseneck has the coolest climate resulting in a fresh style, packed with peach and apricot flavours and keen acidity. The Nonnenberg vineyard’s loam and gravel produce wines which are more exotic in style, with orange and grapefruit character. Berg Schlossberg is the finest and rarest of the wines offered by this estate.
The date of harvest by selective hand picking is always determined by the highest physiological ripeness and perfect health of the grapes. This results in the perfect balance, aromas and structure which are more important to Breuer than the must weight. Extract and depth have priority to yield. The estate believes in traditional artisan methods of vinification. Conscious of their commitment to protect the environment they implement natural methods of viticulture. Accordingly they reduce yields to an average of 42 hl/ha, diversify from single crop farming methods and use seasonal grass cover.
