Gruner Veltliner hit the wine world headlines in 2002 as a variety capable of making wines to rival the very best Chardonnay and Riesling.
It became a darling grape of the New York Wine scene, and its popularity has spread internationally.
Since 2002 Gruner Veltliner has remained popular though other fashions come and go. Read on to learn more about this great variety.
We have examples from Kamptal, Weinveitel, Wachau and Carnuntum. Gruner Veltliner’s taste has wide appeal It fits in with the trend for lighter-bodied, un-oaked dry white wines. While Sauvignon Blanc offers greater aromatic intensity it can be a less versatile match with food. Riesling’s super high acidity does not appeal to every palate.
In contrast, Gruner Veltliner’s taste profile is semi-aromatic, it has attractive peppery, herbal and mineral flavours with keen but not overbearing acidity. As a result, it easily matches a wide range of cooking styles and foods.
Gruner is still just that little bit different, it’s well priced and at each quality level offers value for money.
