Sir Ceal 5 year old Madeira 50cl
Learn More About This Wine
Made from the Sercial grape variety, this Madeira wine stems from vines growing at higher altitudes. To keep true to the Niepoort style, the grapes are harvested a little earlier. In collaboration with Ricardo Diogo, we created a wine which represents the personality of these two “Sirs” of Portuguese wine. .
The Sercial grapes are harvested from vineyards planted in the Seixal municipality, close to the ocean. Here, the vines are exposed to the intense sea spray which is so typical of the Northern coast of Madeira. After the grapes are pressed in continuous press, the “Sir Ceal” spends 5 years maturing in French oak barrels according to the traditional “canteiro” process. For this wine, Niepoort selected the batches that were exposed to stable temperatures throughout the year. The result is a wine of tremendous elegance, supported by an exceptional acidity and a unique saline character. This wine was aged in traditional barrels (“pipas”) and was bottled in its purest state.
Bright golden in colour. On the nose, the complexity of a Madeira, with notes of honey and molasses, apricot, citrus, dried fruit, and nuts. The palate strikes a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, ending in a long, spiced finish.
