HGA Bodegas takes its name from the initials of its founder Horacio Gormez Araujo. He was born at the foot of what is now the largest continuous planting of Albariño in private hands in the RIas Baixas DO, 100Ha in size, and unusually for the region is planted on steep terraces. The vineyard, Altos de Torona is located in the Rosal sub district of Rias Baixas. Torre de Ermelo is typical of the sub-zone, aromatic, fruit driven, but with dry minerality and stone fruit character. In recent years Horacio has acquired substantial holdings in the Ribeira Sacra region 100 miles to the east. Here on the steep banks of the river Sil, Mencia is planted, on very steep slopes, production levels are low, but the resulting wine elegant, mineral, sappy and with characteristic wild fruit character.
